'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire' propels franchise above $1 billion as sequel opens to over $45 million. - Sunday Morning Update

No snowstorm or negative reviews hampered Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire's opening weekend, as the Gil Kenan-directed, Jason Reitman-produced sequel earned $45.2 million after a strong performance among families on Saturday.

esterday's revenue was $16.8 million, 5% more than the $16 million forecasted for Friday. If the figures hold up, it's the second-best start ever for a Ghostbusters film,

trailing only the 2016 female cast of Kirsten Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon.

According to Sony, the domestic debut of the fifth Ghostbusters film brings the franchise's total revenue to more over $1 billion.

According to studio figures, the franchise has grossed $985 million over four films, which exceeds Box Office Mojo's estimate. Mojo's overseas numbers are incorrect for the initial 1984 picture.

Foreign earnings for Frozen Empire were $16.4 million from 7,500+ screens in 25 nations, bringing the global total to $61.6 million on a $100 million budget.

The opening is good news, as some exhibitors were concerned that the film might fall into the mid $30 million area based on presales that were substantially lower than Kung Fu Panda 4.

Sony's marketing staff, on the other hand, saw the sequel through to completion because the brand is beloved and important to the firm.
